Study of common proper motion double stars – The CPMDS catalogue

Panagiotis Gavras (GEPI)

The double (or multiple) stars are the rule among the stars in our solar neighborhood and probably in the Universe. The double stars that one can view with an optical telescope are called visual. Among the visual double stars there are pairs that we can detect that their components have the same proper motion.

Unfortunately the present knowledge of common proper motion double stars is rather poor. Up to now about 7500 such objects are available through Vizier database. We will present our contribution to the identification of new CPM stars, using data from PM2000 catalogue. With this work we increased the number by 30%. Additionally we re-measured astrometric properties, such as angular separation and position angle for 926 known WDS double stars.
