The Tully-Fisher Relation and Rotation Curves of Galaxies to z ∼ 1

The rotation curves of galaxies along with their scaling relations, such as the Tully-Fisher relation, can be used not only to understand the formation and evolution of the baryonic components of galaxies but also their dark matter content. We present new measures of the relations between stellar mass, rotational velocity, and absolute magnitude for an inclusive sample of 129 disk-like galaxies over nearly two-thirds of the age of the universe. We show evidence for modest evolution in the self-similar properties of disk galaxies to redshift z∼1. We use our data to evaluate the likely contributions of baryons and dark matter within observable disk radii to gain a better understanding of the observed galaxy evolution.
