Hypercritical accretion in Gamma Ray Burst central engines

William Lee (Instituto de Astronomia, UNAM)

Attention ! Jour inhabituel !

GRB central engines are capable of converting the equivalent of a substantial fraction of a solar mass into energy in a matter of seconds to minutes. The specifics of this process likely involve accretion at extremely high rates onto newborn stellar mass black holes or neutron stars. Under such conditions, the only mechanism available for cooling, other than advection, is neutrino emission.
I will review the general properties of such neutrino-cooled flows, along with their dynamical evolution and observational signatures in terms applicable to both long and short GRBs.
