The disc origin of the Milky Way bulge

Francesca Fragkoudi

Understanding the origin of the stellar populations in the Milky Way (MW) bulge can provide clues to the formation history of our Galaxy, as well as to the formation and evolution of disc galaxies in general. To this aim, I will show evidence from N-body simulations pointing to the disc origin of the MW bulge, and compare the models to data from large spectroscopic surveys, such as APOGEE. I will show that the kinematics and metallicity of the MW bulge can be understood using a simple model where the known inner disc populations of the Milky Way, i.e. the thin and thick disc, make up the stellar populations of the bulge.
