Star formation is a key process to unveil the story of our universe. Due to its multi scale and multi physics nature, it is however one of the most complex phenomena. In the talk, after a broad introduction of the subject including the challenging aspects and the most salient questions
that must be addressed to understand star formation, I will describe a scenario for the formation, the collapse and the destruction of molecular clouds stressing the large uncertainties that are remaining.
